SUMMARY:Stef Jansen: Shifting values of housing in Bosnia and Herzegovina
DESCRIPTION:Questions of housing are a key prism through which people in Bo
 snia and Herzegovina (BiH) have experienced social transformations over th
 e last three and a half decades. They shaped experiences of the 1992-1995 
 war\, in which half of the country’s population was displaced and had to
  find accommodation away from their original place of residence. They were
  at the heart of a vast foreign-enforced programme of reconstruction and r
 eturn of the displaced\, which effectively centred on restitution of prope
 rty and tenancy rights. What has attracted much less attention\, including
  in BiH itself\, is that these war and postwar developments simultaneously
  entailed an ideological shift in terms of the value attributed to housing
 . In practice\, from a society in which a substantial proportion of the po
 pulation lived in socially-owned property according to the Yugoslav social
 ist self-management system\, BiH was turned into a ‘property-owning demo
 cracy’. Considerations of exchange value gained precedence over those of
  use-value. This presentation traces the processes through which this has 
 come to be.\nSocial anthropologist Stef Jansen is professor at the Univers
 ity of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and honorary professor at the Uni
 versity of Manchester (UK). His ethnographic studies in the post-Yugoslav 
 states have focused\, amongst other things\, on questions of home\, hope\,
  the state\, borders\, political subjectivity\, social transformations and
  everyday geopolitics.\n \nVeranstaltung im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung »Ze
 rstörung - Zuflucht - Zukunft. Wohnen im und nach dem Krieg« des DFG-Gra
 duiertenkollegs »Gewohnter Wandel. Gesellschaftliche Transformation und r
 äumliche Materialisierung des Wohnens« im Wintersemester 2025/26\nWie wi
 rkt sich Krieg auf das Wohnen aus und was können wir durch den Blickwinke
 l des Wohnens über Krieg lernen? In sieben Veranstaltungen beleuchten int
 ernationale Forschende aus Stadtplanung\, Humangeographie\, Architektur\, 
 Kunstgeschichte sowie Rechtswissenschaften und Anthropologie politische\, 
 ökonomische\, bauliche und soziale Dimensionen der Wohnungsversorgung in 
 Zeiten drohender und andauernder Kriege sowie sich anschließender Nachkri
 egsperioden. Die Beiträge blicken auf Entwicklungen in Bosnien\, Deutschl
 and\, Israel\, Jordanien\, Syrien und der Ukraine und zeigen auf\, wie Kri
 eg als Zäsur bestehende Ordnungen und Strukturen zerstört\, welche Neuer
 ungen staatlicher Planungen zur Versorgung mit Wohnraum sich daraus entwic
 kelt haben\, wie die Menschen den alltäglichen Herausforderungen des Wohn
 ens begegnen und wie bewaffnete Konflikte gesellschaftliche Wohnrealitäte
 n und -identitäten dauerhaft prägen.\nDie Ringvorlesung findet dienstags
  14tägig um 18.30 Uhr im Wechsel an den Standorten Weimar und Frankfurt/M
