SUMMARY:Triebkräfte rechter Politik – The driving forces of right-wing p
 olitics
DESCRIPTION:Economic Drivers of Contemporary Processes of Fascistization (W
 orkshop)\n(Veranstaltungssprache/Language: Englisch/English)\nOur historic
al moment seems to resist the clarity of names. “New Right\,” “far-r
 ight extremism\,” “populism\,” “authoritarianism\,” “post-demo
cracy”\, “late fascism” – these terms each capture certain aspects
of our current political trajectory\, yet none fully encapsulates the tra
nsformations underway. How should we name our present? What concepts are u
seful to understand the contradictions that fracture the current moment? A
nd how do we interpret the rightward shifts in the ideological and politic
al landscapes of most capitalist societies – both in the Global North an
d South\, at the center and periphery of the world-system? This workshop d
oes not seek to settle on fixed labels or static categories. Rather\, it a
ims to explore the ongoing\, unresolved processes that have not yet crysta
llized into a stable political-ideological configuration. The processual t
erm "fascistization" seems to be a proper starting point to capture this d
ynamic situation.\nIn the wake of the Trump election and the early electio
ns in Germany\, there have been debates both in the public sphere and in t
rade unions about how economic concerns and grievances act as a key driver
of anti-democratic attitudes – see\, for example\, the debate around th
e buzzword "anti-fascist economics" (Isabella Weber). The workshop aims to
discuss the hypothesis that the economic conditions experienced by worker
 s today – precarization\, informal work\, job insecurity\, impoverishmen
t\, declining purchasing power\, and the erosion of social mobility – ar
e crucial factors in creating a greater susceptibility to authoritarian an
d exclusionary ideologies and fueling the processes of social fascistizati
on. Contemporary capitalism certainly has disruptive and destructive impac
ts on workers' material living conditions. But how do objective economic d
ynamics and actual experiences of economic deprivation relate to subjectiv
e and sociocultural processes of sensemaking? What narratives circulate in
which economic problems are addressed and interpreted in right-wing popul
ist terms? And how can we conceptualize and theorize these processes and r
elations? By presenting case studies from both Argentina and Germany\, we
will bring empirical evidence to investigate these questions situatedly an
 d comparatively.\n \nPlease register: anmeldung@ifs-frankfurt.de (registr
