Biography

Studies in Philosophy and Law in Frankfurt. 1983 first state examination in Law. 1983 to 1996 research assistant and university assistant in Frankfurt, among others from 1986 to 1990 in a working group on legal theory funded by the DFG within the framework of the Leibniz Program under the direction of Jürgen Habermas. 1987 doctorate, 1997 habilitation. Appointments to professorships at the European University Institute Florence and at the Universities of Rostock and Zurich. 1995 to 1996 Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. 2000 Visiting Professor for Comparative Criminal Law at Buffalo Law School, State University of New York. 2001 Visiting Fellow at Corpus Christi College Oxford. 2003 Professeur invité at Maison des Sciences de l'Homme at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. 2012 Visiting Professor at the Department of Law at the London School of Economics. 1997 to 2001 Member of the Program Advisory Board of the Werner Reimer Conferences for Innovative Issues in Science at the Werner Reimers Stiftung in Bad Homburg v. d. H. 1999 to 2001 Speaker of the Program Advisory Board. Since 1998 Member of the Board of the German Section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy. Since 2001 member of the Research Council at the Institute for Social Research. 2007 coordination of the application for the establishment of a Cluster of Excellence »Formation of Normative Orders / Die Herausbildung normativer Ordnungen« within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments. 2007 to 2019 speaker of the Cluster of Excellence 243 »Formation of Normative Orders«.
