Cooperations
As a research institute, the IfS understands itself as a site of cooperative, publicly visible and intervening social research. It maintains long-term cooperative relationships with the partners listed below.
autorenbuchhandlung marx & co
In cooperation with autorenbuchhandlung marx & co and the Karl Marx Bookshop, the Prismen series is held.
The Prismen event series is a cooperation with autorenbuchhandlung marx & co that has existed since 2015; since 2022, the Karl Marx Bookshop has also been involved in the Prismen cooperation. On three to four evenings per year, book publications from the Institute as well as thematic focal points from the Institute’s journal WestEnd are discussed. In addition, readings are held by authors whose publications are closely connected to the IfS’s research priorities.
Bildungsstätte Anne Frank
The aim of the cooperation with the Anne Frank Educational Center, which has been a cooperation partner of the IfS since 2023, is the joint implementation of academic events, particularly in the fields of antisemitism, racism and other forms of hostility towards groups, as well as political networking within Frankfurt and beyond.
Cátedra Libre Immanuel Wallerstein
In order to consolidate academic exchange with university and non-university institutions in the region, the IfS has been a formal member since 2023 of the Latin American research network CLACSO (Consejo Latino Americano de Ciencias Sociales), which brings together more than 900 social science and humanities institutions in 51 countries.
Center for Social Critique
The cooperation with the Center for Social Critique at Humboldt University of Berlin, which has been ongoing since 2017, was formalized in 2023. Among other outcomes, this cooperative framework, which also includes the New School for Social Research, has given rise to the annual Summer School Critical Theory. The Director of the Center, Rahel Jaeggi, is a member of the IfS Scientific Advisory Board; its Co-Director, Robin Celikates, is a Permanent Fellow at the Institute.
CIECS/CONICET
Since 2024, a formal cooperation has existed with the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios sobre Cultura y Sociedad (CIECS) and the Centro Científico Tecnológico CONICET Córdoba (Argentina). The subject of this cooperation agreement is the long-term linkage of the institutions in the field of research on the ‘renewal of critical theory and analyses of social change in Europe and Latin America’.
CLACSO
In order to consolidate academic exchange with university and non-university institutions in the region, the IfS has been a formal member since 2023 of the Latin American research network CLACSO (Consejo Latino Americano de Ciencias Sociales), which brings together more than 600 social science and humanities institutions in 51 countries.
Fritz Bauer Institute
The cooperation between the IfS, the Fritz Bauer Institute and the Sigmund Freud Institute aims at establishing a lasting network between these three research institutions associated with Goethe University. In addition to cooperation in safeguarding good academic practice, research projects are also jointly implemented.
Karl Marx Bookshop
In cooperation with the Karl Marx Bookshop and autorenbuchhandlung marx & co, the Prismen series is held.

Coordination Office for Universities and Trade Unions Frankfurt–Rhine–Main (registered association)
Since 2024, a formal cooperation has existed with the non-profit association dedicated to promoting cooperation between universities and trade unions in the Frankfurt–Rhine–Main region. The cooperation aims at intensive exchange as well as the joint initiation and implementation of events and research projects that are thematically connected to changes in the world of work and broader social transformations.
medico international (registered association)
Since 2023, the IfS has officially cooperated with medico international. The focus of this cooperation lies in the organization of joint events within the framework of global political debates. Most recently, this included the joint lecture series ‘Turbulent Psyche[s]. Affects and Struggles in the Pandemic’ and the international conference ‘(Re)constructing the World. Aid, Solidarity, Politics’.
Paulskirche Network / Transnational Democracy Association
Since 2022, the IfS has cooperated with the Transnational Democracy Association and is, through this cooperation, a formal member of the Paulskirche Network. Established on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Paulskirche, the network addressed the realization of global democracy in a wide range of events between 2022 and 2024, including within the framework of a Global Assembly.
In May 2023, the National Assembly in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche marked its 175th anniversary. The Paulskirche Network – Democracy in the Making, in which the IfS participates, takes this anniversary as an opportunity to rethink democracy and to defend it as an ongoing process. The network’s activities extend from mid-2022 through the anniversary year 2023 to the establishment of selected formats beyond 2024. The IfS is, among other things, involved in the event series WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE, a conference on property [https://www.ifs.uni-frankfurt.de/eventleser/symposium-demokratie-und-eigentum.html ] in April 2023, a doctoral researchers’ conference in September 2023 and the two planned and central assemblies within the framework of a Global Assembly in May 2023 and May 2024.

The cooperation between the IfS, the Sigmund Freud Institute and the Fritz Bauer Institute aims at establishing a lasting network between these three research institutions associated with Goethe University. medico international Foundation
Since 2019, the IfS has organized the event series Der utopische Raum in cooperation with the medico international Foundation and the Frankfurter Rundschau.
The Der utopische Raum event series has been an ongoing cooperation since 2019 between the medico international Foundation, the Institute for Social Research and the Frankfurter Rundschau. The series understands itself as a critical forum for projects, initiatives and academic approaches that highlight pathways of transformation in theory and practice. The opening conferences and monthly evening events are devoted to different overarching themes, for example Critique of Colonial Ways of Thinking (2021/22) and Cosmopolitanism from Below (2022/23).
Suhrkamp Verlag
Together with Suhrkamp Verlag, the IfS has held the Adorno Lectures annually since 2002.
Since 2002, the Institute for Social Research has organized an annual series of lectures in cooperation with Suhrkamp Verlag, held over three evenings in remembrance of Theodor W. Adorno. The explicit aim is not to interpret his work, but rather to make visible the living traces of his interdisciplinary influence in philosophy, the social sciences, literary studies and aesthetics.
Collaborative Research Platform »Worlds of Contradiction«
The cooperation partnership established in 2024 between the IfS and the collaborative research platform Worlds of Contradiction (WOC) at the University of Bremen aims at substantive exchange and the implementation of events and projects that are thematically connected to the analysis of contradictions in contemporary society.
